Aščiluk Street is located in the central part of the Old Town, in Baščaršija.

It was laid out in the second half of the 15th century as part of Minetoglu Mehmed Bey mahala (neighborhood). Mehmed Bey was the first Sanjak Bey of the Bosnian Sanjak (administrative province). The mosque which was built in this neighborhood was destroyed in the great fire of 1879. The street took its name from the aščinice (public kitchens) which catered to the needs of travelers, as well as random passers-by. Most of Sarajevo’s aščinice were located on this street during the Ottoman period. This was also a time when many trades were becoming more specialized and a well- planned bazaar was taking shape.
